1. Mom washed, dried and folded four loads of laundry in under an hour at the local Nauvoo laundry depot - yeah! It was great to sit and take a breather while taking small town Nauvoo in.
2. Dad took the kids to the Print Shop, the Pendleton House and Log School and the Webb Brothers Blacksmith Shop.
3. Dad treated us to ice cream shakes at the at a mom and pop cafe.
4. Went to the musical, Just Plain Anna Amanda at the historic cultural hall.
5. Visited more sites: Brickyard, Herber C. Kimball home, Lucy Mack Smith home and the Lyon Drug Store.
7. Travel to Carthage, IL (25 miles) to visit Carthage jail.
Carthage Jail
At the Carthage Jail on June 27, 1844, a mob murdered the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, who thus sealed their testimonies of Jesus Christ with their blood.
Several days earlier, the Prophet and others voluntarily went to Carthage, the county seat located about 20 miles southeast of Nauvoo, to answer charges of civil disturbance. Joseph and Hyrum were held in Carthage Jail pending trial and were guaranteed protection from mob violence by the governor of Illinois.
Joseph, Hyrum, John Taylor, and Willard Richards were in the jailer's upstairs bedroom when a mob stormed the jail shortly after five o'clock. The Prophet and his brother were shot and killed, John Taylor was seriously wounded, and Willard Richards escaped unharmed. The mob fled, and the martyrs' bodies were taken back to Nauvoo the next day.
The jail was used for about 25 years and then became a private residence. The Church purchased the building and property in 1903. To commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Martyrdom in 1994, the jail was restored to its appearance at the time of Joseph and Hyrum's death.
8. Back to Navuoo for a dinner buffet at the Hotel Navuoo. This the the first time we ate 'out'. The kids were in heaven. Most of our meals have been and will be hotel breakfasts, lunch picnics from the cooler and dinners cooked in the hotel room, either using a hot-plate or the mircowave. Feeding a family of seven is pricey so we opted to eat out as little as possible.
9. A walk through Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds at dusk. Again, another sacred and special place. The kids searched for the oldest dated stone while Kerri picked flowers and lovingly placed them on all of the graves.
10. Back to the hotel for some good Disney Channel shows, showers and books. We usually upgraded to suite rooms which included two queen beds and a pull out couch. The twin girls and the boys rotated sharing the queen bed and the couch every night. Makayla refused to share a bed with anyone so she got the floor and the couch cushions all to herself (hee hee). It was a perfect set-up.
